Re: Stand with the People of Sudan:

For Accountability and the Immediate Restoration of a Civilian-led Government in Sudan

Dear DWAG supporters,

We are pleased to inform you that Darfur Women Action Group (DWAG), along with 16 civil society leaders, submitted a letter to United Nations Security Council members. DWAG and 14 civil society leaders also submitted a letter to President Biden and Secretary of State Blinken. The letters demand accountability and swift restoration of a civilian-led government in Sudan.  They also raised concern, stating that despite the reinstatement of Prime Minister Hamdok to his pre-coup position, the Sovereign Council has not followed through with the agreed-upon Interim Constitution—to transfer power to the civilian-led government by the end of their term, which fell on November 17, 2021. The letters further stressed that the coup is a crime of global concern, and there must be tough accountability measures from the United States and the United Nations Security Council members, including targeted sanctions (asset freezing and travel bans) on the military generals responsible for orchestrating the coup and murdering peaceful protesters. We believe accountability for orchestrating a coup and the transfer of power to a civilian-led government must not be compromised.

The letters include strong recommendations for accountability for those responsible for orchestrating the coup. Read our letter to the Biden administration here. Read our letter to the U.S Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken here. Read our letter to the United Nations Security Council members here.

We call on our supporters to use the following recommendations that DWAG and its partners put forward to demand strong measures from the United Nations Security Council and the Biden Administration to ensure the restoration of peace in Sudan. Please join us to speak up for the people of Sudan and amplify their voices while they fight for freedom and justice. Only with our collective effort can we make a difference.
