Justice Must Prevail

Darfur Women Action Group (DWAG) is pleased to share the great news that Ali Kushayb, former Janjaweed captain and war criminal, has been brought before the International Criminal Court (ICC) today for an initial appearance. Kushayb was arrested for twenty-two counts of crimes against humanity and twenty-eight counts of war crimes, all against the people of Darfur. He surrendered to authorities and the UN peacekeeping force MINUSCA in the Central African Republic last week.

An ICC Judge has ensured that Kushayb clearly understands the charges he is being accused of. A confirmation of charges hearing has been provisionally scheduled for 7 December 2020. If all goes well in this hearing, Kushayb is set to become the first of several perpetrators of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity responsible for the crisis in Darfur to be brought to trial. We are strongly calling on Sudan to transfer the remaining ICC indictees ex-president Omar Al-Bashir and co-conspirators Ahmed Haroun and Abdelrahim Hussein to the Hague.

DWAG would like to thank each and every one of you who have supported our fight for justice in Darfur over the course of the Seventeen years of the longstanding crises in Darfur. A year ago, it might have seemed impossible to bring criminal consequences upon one of the chief perpetrators. Although this process cannot be completed overnight, we are nevertheless confident that justice will be realized with determination, perseverance, and a strong commitment to what we believe in. We certainly believe that serious crimes such as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity  must not go unpunished.

There cannot be peace in Darfur and Sudan at large unless there is justice and accountability. Please continue to join us in demanding the trials of the remaining criminals responsible for the Darfur crisis, and in fighting the culture of impunity surrounding criminal actions around the world.

Please join us to call on our leaders to make accountability for genocide crimes their top priority agenda and press Sudan to immediately surrender Omar Al-bashir and other responsible for committing crimes against the people of Darfur

DWAG strongly calls on the member states of the UNSC and the states parties to the ICC to uphold their legal obligation support an expedited process of arrest and surrender of the Sudanese  officials wanted by the ICC and to provide support to the ICC to proceed in delivering justice to the victims.
